Affiche officielle

From his book Maria Callas: Letters and Memoirs (Albin Michel, 2019), Tom Volf designs and directs a theatrical reading performed by Monica Bellucci. This is the first time that the Italian actress has appeared on a theatre stage. The show unfolds around the unpublished correspondence and memories of the singer: the modest childhood in New York, the war years in Athens, the debut at the opera, the peaks of the career, the scandals, the idealized love for Meneghini, the passion of Onassis, the Parisian solitude of the last years. Maria and Callas, separated and reunited by the word itself.

Created in the fall of 2019 at Théâtre Marigny, the play resumes in 2020 at the Théâtre des Bouffes Parisiens. Followed by an international tour in ten countries - including Greece (Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens), the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Turkey - in three languages: French, Italian (Callas, Letters and Memories), English (Letters & Memoirs). A version with orchestra is created in Athens in 2021, then given at the Théâtre du Châtelet on November 14 and 15, 2022 with the Lamoureux Orchestra under the direction of Philippe Forget. The show closes in 2023 with two performances in New York and Los Angeles.

I put myself at their service with these letters.

Notes on staging

The show is the stage culmination of a biographical work begun with the book Maria Callas: Letters and Memoirs, published by Albin Michel in 2019. At the heart of the work: correspondence, autographs and memoirs of the singer, largely unpublished, entrusted to Tom Volf by those close to Maria Callas over several years of investigation. It is this material that becomes a living word on stage – no longer an external biographical portrait, but the self-portrait of the diva by herself.

The staging chooses the intimate: an armchair, a lamp, a few accessories, lighting worked in chiaroscuro. Monica Bellucci occupies the stage alone, without contemporary transposition. When the version with orchestra is created in Athens in 2021 then presented at the Théâtre du Châtelet in November 2022, it is the Lamoureux Orchestra which dialogues with the words, conducted by Philippe Forget, without ever crushing it. The spectator enters the singer’s living room rather than an opera production.

For Monica Bellucci, who until then had never appeared on a theatre stage, the commitment is radical: “I put myself at their service with these letters. I just hope that my voice can convey even half of half of the emotions that were in this woman. » Four years of touring, ten countries, three languages, for what remains to this day the only theatrical foray of the Italian actress.
